RUSH LIMBAUGH (1951 - )

Conservative talk-radio host and activist, born in Cape Girardeau, Missouri, USA. He worked as a disc jockey and sports publicist before beginning a radio programme in San Diego, CA, at the end of the 1980s, blending political commentary and satire. His growing popularity soon led him to New York City, where he built a national audience for his daytime show.

He called feminists ‘feminazis’, and conservationists became ‘environmental wackos’. He was given credit for rousing conservative sentiment that contributed to the Republican capture of the House of Representatives in 1994. By the end of the decade, his national influence had somewhat ebbed, but he remained a symbol of how talk radio could reshape American politics.
