Sunil Dutt is a political leader and actor. He was born in the undivided Punjab. After Partition, he came to India. He undertook several jobs, from clerk to radio compere. Later he made his debut in Hindi films, in the film ‘Railway Platform'’ opposite Nalini Jaywant in 1955. He got a major role in Mehboob Khan’s ‘Mother India’ in 1957. During the shooting of the film Nargis got caught in a fire and Sunil Dutt saved her. Later they got married. Dutt acted in successful films like ‘Waqt, ‘Gumraah’ ‘Mujhe jeene Do’ and ‘Khandan’
After wife Nargis’s untimely death, Sunil Dutt entered active politics. He entered the Lok Sabha from the Bombay North-West constituency in 1984. He defeated noted jurist Ram Jethmalani in the polls. He retained the seat in 1989 and 1991. He did not contest the 1996 Lok Sabha election due to the arrest of his son Sanjay Dutt under the T.A.D.A. After the personal intervention of Bal Thackeray, Sanjay was released on bail. He was again elected to the Lok Sabha in 1999.
