his father's antique business and worked in England (1902-1905). He returned to
Paris to open an art gallery (1911), and became famous as a dealer of such
artists as Picasso, Braque, and Matisse. In 1935 he opened a branch in England.
Fleeing from the Germans, he emigrated to New York City (1940), where he opened
a gallery that successfully represented contemporary American and European
artists.
