Dr. Sarvapalli Radhakrishnan, the second President of India, was a great philosopher endowed with a highly intellectual mind. He was born on September 5, 1888 at Tirutani in Chennai. His education began and ended in Chennai itself. He taught at Mysore and Calcutta Universities and became Professor of Eastern Religions and Ethics at Oxford.

       

In 1946, he was the chief Indian delegate to UNESCO. In 1947, he became member of the Indian Assembly. Radhakrishnan was sent to the Soviet Union as Indian Ambassador in 1949. During these years he became very close to Jawaharlal Nehru. He remained the Vice-President of India from 1952 to 1962. After the death of Dr. Rajendra Prasad he was elected as President in 1962. After serving the nation for five years as the President of India, he decided to spend his time in peace and bliss amongst his old friends and relatives. In 1954, he was awarded the Bharat Ratna. He passed away on April 17,1975. His birthday is celebrated as Teacher’s Day all over India.
