Pamulaparti Venkata Narasimha Rao is the former Prime Minister of India. He is a scholar who brought about great changes in India’s economic and external policies. He was born in 1921, in an area near the Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh border. In his youth, he participated in the Quit India Movement.

       

He began his political career in Andhra Pradesh. He was a minister in the state government. In 1971, he became the Chief Minister. He entered the Indian Parliament in 1972 and later became the Minister for External Affairs, Minister for Home Affairs and Minister of Defence. In 1991, after Rajiv Gandhi’s assassination, Rao became the Prime Minister. His greatest achievement was the economic reforms and inflow of investment. In 1996, his party lost the general elections and he had to resign from the post. In 1997, the C.B.I, chargesheeted him for bribery and corruption. In 2000, the court found him guilty and sentenced him to three years in prison.
