NARAYAN DUTT TIWARI
       

Narayan Dutt Tiwari is a veteran leader of the Congress Party. He is the first elected Chief Minister of Uttaranchal. He was born at village Baluti of district Nainital in the year 1925. He was jailed for taking part in the freedom movement in 1942. After his release from jail he took admission in the Allahabad University. He secured first division in M.A. and topped the university.

       

In 1952, he was elected M.L.A. from Nainital constituency. In 1963, he joined the Congress. He was elected M.L.A. on the Congress ticket from the Kashipur constituency in 1965. The same year he was appointed a minister in the state government. Later he became the Minister for Finance and Parliamentary Affairs in the Chaudhary Charan Singh Government.

       

In 1976, he became the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh Tiwari became Foreign Minister in the Central Government in 1986. When Uttaranchal was formed, he became its first Chief Minister. He still occupies a prominent position in the Congress party.
