Mayawati, the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, was born on January 15,1956, in New Delhi, but she is a native of Badalpur village in Ghaziabad. Mayawati received most of her education in Delhi. After completing her education, she started teaching in schools run by the Delhi Administration from 1977 to 1984. During these years she was also involved in politics and participated in student movements. She always raised her voice to ensure justice to the exploited, oppressed and weaker sections of the society.
She entered Parliament for the first time in 1989 and in 1994, she entered the Rajya Sabha from Uttar Pradesh. She became the Chief Minister of U.P. for the first time on June 3, 1995 and remained in office till October 17, 1995. Her second term as the Chief Minister in 1997 lasted only for six months. As the Chief Minister she took up many historic steps for the upliftment of dalits. She formed the State Women’s Commission to ensure economic and social development of women.
