Mamta Banerjee is a prominent political leader. She is the President the Trinamool Congress. She has also been the Railway Minister of India. She was born on January 5,1955 in Kolkata. Her father’s name is Promileshwar Banerjee. She did her M.A. from Calcutta University.

       

Banerjee was the General Secretary of Mahila Congress (I), West Bengal, from 1976 to 1980. In 1984, she was elected to the 8th Lok Sabha and in 1985, she became a member of the committee on the Welfare of Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes. In 1991, she became a minister in the Central Cabinet.

       

Banerjee is a firebrand leader. She is a harsh opponent of the C.P.I. (M) in West Bengal. Later she parted ways with the Congress and floated a new party - the Trinamool Congress. She became the Railway Minster in the N.D.A. government in 1999. But her party’s relationship with the BJP is uneasy. When Tehelka.com exposed corruption in the government, she left the government. She is very popular in West Bengal.
