Jayprakash Narayan, a Marxist leader, was a man of deep vision; and revolutionary ideals. He was born on October 11, 1902, to Harsudayal and Phulrani at Sirabdiara village on the border of Uttar Pradesh and Bihar. Narayan did his schooling in Patna. His mastery over the language and subject earned him an award for his essay on ‘The Present State of Hindi in Bihar’. He pursued his higher studies in the Patna College.

       

Narayan was an avid reader and he read books and poems by Maithilisharan Gupta and Bharatendu Harishchandra, which imbibed in him the courage and velour of the Rajput kings. He also drew inspiration from the Bhagawad Gita. He took part in the freedom struggle. His exposure to Marxism made him a staunch believer in socialism. Narayan was greatly influenced by Vinoba Bhave’s Sarvodaya Movement. He was a towering figure at the time of the Emergency. Under his guidance, all the political parties  united  to form  the Janata Party.  It quelled  the authoritarianism of Mrs. Indira Gandhi and restored democracy. He died on October 8,1979.
