MOTHER TERESA

Mother Teresa was a great woman who served humanity. She was born on August 27,1910 in Yugoslavia. Her original name was Agnes Goxa Bojaxiu and she was very compassionate. She came to Kolkata in 1929 when she was just 19 years old. She was deeply moved by the poverty and dedicated her full life towards serving the sick and the poor. When she first arrived in Kolkata, she had just Rs. 5 and was helped by a priest. She lived in a small room for nine years where she nursed the ill back to health. She would roam around in the dangerous, dark and dirty streets of Kolkata at night, covering the cold and offering food and shelter to the poor. Compassion, dignity and sympathy marked every action of hers. Through her efforts, she managed to open several institutions to help the downtrodden, e.g. Missionaries of Charity, Nirmal Hriday and Shishu Bhavan, which houses the mentally and physically challenged children.

Mother Teresa was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979 and the BharatRatnainl980. She passed away on September 5,1997.
