CLINT EASTWOOD

Born Clinton Eastwood, Jr., on May 30, 1930, in San Francisco, California, he had a tough childhood because of the Great Depression, as his parents moved frequently in search of work, finally settling in Oakland. There he went to high school, graduating in 1948. Striking out on his own, he held various menial jobs before being drafted into the army. Clint Eastwood, possibly the world’s most famous cowboy - started his working life as a lumberjack, forest fire-fighter and a steelworker. Discharged in 1953, he enrolled in Los Angeles City College as a business administration major, supporting himself with various odd jobs which included digging swimming pool.

It was the anthology TV series The West Point Story which launched Clint onto the screens of American audiences. In 1971, after years of averagely-faring Westerns, he encountered a stroke of luck, Frank Sinatra turned down the part of detective Harry Callahan in Dirty Harry and the role was offered to Clint. In 1973 he reprised Harry Callahan in Magnum Force and, in the same year, signed a contract with Warner Bros. At this point Clint was romantically involved with Sondra Locke and he began a series of many collaborations with her, the first of which was The Outlaw Josey Wales. In 1976 Clint reprised Callahan yet again in The Enforcer, and the following year he teamed with an orangutan in the comedy Every Which Way But Loose, and in 1980 he showed off his singing talents with a performance on the Bronco Billy soundtrack.

Clint was still succeeding as an actor, but his interest in politics was also growing and in 1986 he won a landslide victory as mayor of Carmel in California. He served in this position for two years and as soon as his term was over he moved to the more serious business of executive producing with Thelonius Monk: Straight, No Chaser. In 1992 Clint re-established his superstar status and won widespread acclaim with Unforgiven, which won the Best Picture and Best Director Oscar. Clint’s most recent project involved teaming up with a group of old friends for the astronaut adventure movie Space Cowboys. He produced it and also starred alongside Tommy Lee Jones, Donald Sutherland and James Garner.
