James B. Eads

died March 8, 1887, Nassau, Bahamas                                                         
in full James Buchanan Eads American engineer best known for his triple-arch               
steel bridge over the Mississippi River at St. Louis, contained a 520-foot-long center span,
and several other engineering innovations.. Another                                         
project provided a year-round navigation channel for New Orleans by means of               
jetties (1879).                                                                             
Eads was named for his mother's cousin James Buchanan, a Pennsylvania                       
congressman who later became president of the United?                                       
He played a critical role in the Civil War when he supplied ironclad gunboats               
that helped ensure Union control of the Kentucky–Tennessee River Systems.
